GOOD NEWS FOR AIR TRAVELLERS

TOI  REPORTS: After playing Santa to airlines, civil aviation minister  Praful Patel is promising a happier  new year to  passengers firmly grounded by high air fares.  Patel  on Wednesday said fares  would come down from  "January onwards" as airline will begin passing on  the  benefit of cheaper jet fuel. Fares have  risen  by 30%  to 50% in the last few months.  The issue of rationalisation of taxes on jet fuel is likely   to  top the agenda as jet fuel  prices in India are still  among the  highest in the world.  Airlines' decision to lower fares from January would  be  driven  by simple demand-supply logistics. They  expect  people to fly in  the peak travelperiod of October  to  December despite  high fares  and make good their  losses.  Then when travels starts declining  from January   their  lower fares could help stimulate the ebbing demand. This is a cool strategy but lets see if it really helps aviation  industry and  people actually  travel in OCT-DEC. But  definitely people will travel  frequently as seen in the past , once  the fare charges are dropped.
